Conflict, Social Capital and Managing Natural Resources: A West African Case Study

Conflict, Social Capital and Managing Natural Resources: A West African Case Study
This book is the product of a six-year project from the Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management Collaborative Research Support Program (SANREM CRSP) which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It assesses how conflicting claims to scarce natural resources (land, farmer's rights) can be resolved in the agricultural and pastoral systems or arid and semi-arid regions of West Africa. Based on research in Mali, this book describes the approach, components and outcomes of the project and describes hwo the model can be applied elsewhere to improve resource management and community initiatives. The book will be of significant interest to those working in the areas of rural sociology and development and agricultural, development and natural resource economics.

Essence of Capitalism: The Origins of Our Future by Humphrey McQueen,
Essence of Capitalism: The Origins of Our Future by Humphrey McQueen,
"The Essence of Capitalism "is a timely account of globalization, the consumer culture, and the historical roots of our contemporary dilemmas. By tracking the 130-year history of Coca-Cola (and a number of other large American or transnational corporations), this book details all that is best, worst and most powerful about global capitalism. Using Coca-Cola's rise as a case study, here is the tale of how Coca-Cola employed marketing and business practices that enabled it to expand beyond its original market (that which a horse-drawn cart could cover in a day) to -today's massive corporate status. Through the use of the franchise, extreme quality control and powerful marketing, it shows how Coca-Cola -- a company with virtually one product that nobody actually needs and that is, in its original sugar-laden form, plainly very bad for people -- went from being a feel-good tonic in competition with more than a thousand other similar drinks to being the major market force for soft drinks. The book covers topics such as the creation of the idea of a corporation having the status of a person, how the money market works in the flow of capital, the effect of marketing and advertising on consumer tastes and how free trade really becomes oligopoly. By presenting a frightening set of examples, McQueen even joins the debate over what constitutes human nature when he demonstrates how corporations are creating a second nature by altering our needs, whether through the saturation of food with sweeteners or through genetic manipulation. Humphrey McQueen, an original and provocative thinker, features regularly as a commentator on Australian radio, and as a contributor to various newspapers andmagazines. He is the author of more than a dozen books on subjects ranging through history, politics and the visual arts.

Natural capitalism - Natural capitalism is a set of trends and economic reforms to reward energy and material efficiency - and remove professional standards and accounting conventions that prevent such efficiencies. It emerged in the 1990s as a coherent theory of how to exploit market systems and mechanisms of neoclassical economics to save energy, discourage waste, mimic ecology (biomimicry), and in general to support the goals of environmentalism by reframing commodity and product relations as a strictly service economy - extending the services of natural capital.

Eco-capitalism - Eco-capitalism is one of several strategies of the green movement and Green Parties. Its central idea is that capital exists in nature as "natural capital" (self-renewing productive ecosystems that have a measurable ecological yield or tangible benefit to humans) on which all wealth depends.

Hunter Lovins - L. Hunter Lovins is the founder of Natural Capitalism, Inc.

Bioregional revolution - The Bioregional Revolutionary Movement is a political organization promoting ecovillages, bioregionalism, permaculture, natural capitalism, and local currencies as solutions to what they perceive as a world of coverging problems. Among the problems, they see "peak oil" as the first of the many problems (including overpopulation, global epidemics such as bird flu, climate change, water scarcity, and ecological destruction) to affect us in the 21st century.
